about peggy

What makes Fire Starter Healthcare Consulting the right match for you? Because I’m different this way: All the things that providers don’t like to do, because they’d rather be treating patients, are exactly what I love to do most.

Like many people, I did not intentionally seek out a career in healthcare administration. I just had the innate skills it takes to be a great organizer. In fact, my young adult life had me already doing project management, event planning, organizing and managing projects at home, school, church or extra-curricular activities. I have honed those skills through an exciting career in healthcare administration. My desire to always keep learning is continuously fulfilled by the challenges posed by the ever-evolving medical opportunities and technological advancements of healthcare.

In the mid-eighties I had a desire to serve in a volunteer capacity at The Children’s Hospital in Denver (TCH). The children and the environment grabbed hold of me, and I was determined to make it a full-time job. While working at TCH for 10 years I had the opportunity to help develop the then-unknown world of the “outpatient” clinic. I was part of the affiliation created between TCH and University of Colorado, and was at some of the greatest medical institutions in the nation during a revolutionary time for healthcare. I was proud to serve as administrator for the largest outpatient clinic, which housed both medical and surgical specialty clinics. In my time we expanded to serve 32 subspecialties and thousands of patients.
By 1995, I wanted to see how medicine was practiced outside of a hospital. Medical administration and management were in my blood. I was honored with the opportunity to join the team at Colorado Urology Associates, a small urology practice set to explode. With the intention to expand quickly, we were one of the first practices in the country to implement a Windows-based electronic medical record that is still used today. We added physicians, incorporated cutting edge urology services and enlarged our facilities. In 10 years we had grown to 7 physicians and 2 locations. My position grew from Office Manager to Practice Manager and finally to Practice Administrator.
" My desire to always keep learning is continuously fulfilled by the challenges posed by the ever-evolving medical opportunities and technological advancements of healthcare. "
In 2006, I was part of the team of physicians, administrators and consultants that successfully merged two well-established and well-respected urology practices into the largest single specialty urology center in the region. At The Urology Center of Colorado (TUCC) my new position became Chief Operating Officer. Focusing on the day-to-day operations of the center I was responsible for ensuring that TUCC was staffed, trained, regulatory compliant, thriving and growing. I helped manage individuals, teams, projects, meetings, schedules and everything needed to run a 60,000 square foot all-inclusive urology center. Everything, that is, short of practicing medicine, which is the job you love, and which Fire Starter Healthcare Consulting will free you up to do best. Helping them thrive and meeting their desires to grow smartly and effectively were the most rewarding experiences of my career.

I want to bring that opportunity and energy to every medical practice. I believe my years of experience and knowledge provide optimal support and assistance to those seeking consultation for managing the day-to-day operations of a new or expanding medical practice. I’m honored and enthusiastic to help physicians realize their goals and aspirations.

Along the way, Fire Starter became the only possible name for my healthcare consulting practice. The book “Hardwiring Excellence” by Quint Studer took my professional outlook to a new level. Studer writes of how “…in earliest civilizations Fire Starters were people who kept the flame alive . . . if they were successful, the people survived. If they weren’t, the people died.” We are the keepers of the flame and the fire for medical providers who just want to serve patients in the best possible way. With more than 25 years in healthcare operational management, my main goal has been to help physicians not only survive but also to grow and thrive.

I live by Quint Studer’s words: “Fire Starters focus on actions that have purpose, create worthwhile work, and make a difference through an unshakable commitment to excellence.” Fire Starter Healthcare Consulting will build on the spark from your practice and ignite the future you’ve been imagining.
